The Cavaliers escape with a 117 to 109 overtime victory against the Spurs

The Cleveland Cavaliers are hoping to avoid a ninth consecutive loss as they battle the San Antonio Spurs at the AT&T Center tonight.  They are coming fresh off a 116-110 loss they took in the hands of the Houston Rockets on Wednesday.  The Spurs, on the other hand, won the last two games in overtime as they try to grab the third win tonight.


The Cavaliers and the Spurs have met up a grand total of 99 times in the past as the Cavaliers won 31 games while the Texas team went on to grab 68 victories.

The Cleveland Cavaliers would have slight control of the game in the first half as they shot forty-six percent from the field while the Spurs shot forty-two percent.  Kevin Love got hot for twenty points which included two three-pointers.  He also recorded eight rebounds and two assists while Collin Sexton had ten points.  Cedi Osman and Darius Garland combined for 13 points while Tristan Thompson was held scoreless.  Jordan Clarkson played the most minutes off the bench but only had five points.

On the other end of the court, Derrick White scored 11 points on eighty-three percent shooting.  Former Toronto Raptors’ DeMar DeRozan helped out with six points to go along with three defensive rebounds.  LaMarcus Aldridge only had two points while Rudy Gay dropped a three-pointer.  Patty Mills played 12 minutes off the bench as he had six points but it was the visiting team who went into the locker room with a 54-43 advantage.

The Spurs would make a comeback in the second half as they went on a 60-50 scoring run, shooting sixty-one percent from the field.  During that run, DeRozan and Aldridge combined for 25 points while White had six points.  Gay scored six points, as well, while Lonnie Walker dropped four points in the 13 minutes he played off the bench.

As for the Ohio team, Sexton chalked up 14 points while missing only four of his ten shots attempted.  Love helped out with eight points while grabbing eight defensive rebounds.  Thompson scored only two points while Osman had five.  Clarkson got hot for 16 points in the 15 minutes he played off the bench.

With fifteen seconds remaining in the game, the Spurs would obtain a 103-100 lead.  After coming out of a timeout with only seven seconds left, Kevin Love caught a pass from Jordan Clarkson to bury a 26-foot three-pointer to tie the game up.  After a timeout called by the Spurs, DeRozan would try to respond as he attempted a step back jumper but it would miss as the game went into overtime.

During the overtime period, Sexton and Clarkson both scored four points each while Osman and Love drilled a three-pointer each.  As for the Spurs, it was only Aldridge who showed up as he had six points but it wouldn’t be enough as the Cavaliers escaped with a 117-109 win.  Kevin Love finished the game with a season-high 30 points, as well as 17 rebounds, and 2 assists.  DeMar DeRozan settled for 21 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals.

So…what’s next?

The Cleveland Cavaliers will travel to Wisconsin to battle Khris Middleton (17.9 PPG, 5.7 RPG, 3.4 APG, 49.0 FG%, 39.4 3P%) and the Milwaukee Bucks (22-3) on Saturday at 8:30 p.m.  This will mark the third of four matchups between these two teams this season.  The last time they met up was on November 29 when the Bucks came away with a 119-110 win.  Giannis Antetokounmpo finished that game with 33 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks while Darius Garland had 21 points, 1 rebound, and 6 assists.

The San Antonio Spurs will meet up with Devin Booker (25.0 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 6.4 APG, 50.7 FG%, 40.6 3P%) and the Phoenix Suns (11-13) in Mexico City on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.  This will mark the first of three times that these ball clubs will face each other this season.
