Lonzo Ball and the Los Angeles Lakers hoped to bounce back from a harsh loss in the hands of the Los Angeles Clippers. This game would mark the first of four matchups between these two rivals as each team tries to avoid a 0-2 start in the regular season. Ball would hope to make up for his first game as he and the Lakers take on Eric Bledsoe and the Phoenix Suns at the Talking Stick Resort Arena.
During the first quarter of this matchup, the Lakers would shoot fifty-seven percent from the field while the Suns ended up shooting only forty-three percent from the field. North Carolina-native Brandon Ingram would heat up for ten points as he shot eighty percent from the field. He would also knock down a three-pointer in the process of doing so as Jordan Clarkson came off the bench to score nine points. Clarkson would shoot seventy-five percent from the field as he drills two three-pointers in the process. Lonzo Ball would record six points, earning three of them from behind the arc while collecting four defensive rebounds and dishing out three assists.
As for the Suns, Bledsoe recorded eight points which would include two three-pointers and two free-throws. Devin Booker would contribute with eight points, as well, along with three defensive rebounds and two assists. Josh Jackson knocked down two three-pointers and a free-throw to give himself seven points. Tyson Chandler would be limited to only three points but he would gobble up three defensive rebounds as the first quarter ended with a 40-36 lead in the Lakers’ favor.
The Phoenix team would respond as they go on a 37-30 run in the second quarter, shooting sixty-five percent from the field while limiting the visiting team to forty-six percent. T.J. Warren would light the floor up with seventeen points while shooting eighty-six percent from the field. He would collect two defensive rebounds and give out two assists while doing so. Booker added to his scoring total as he put up nine more points, hitting two three-pointers while doing it. He would also earn two defensive rebounds and five assists while Dragan Bender came off the bench to hit a three-pointer and grab three defensive rebounds.
On the other end of the floor, Kyle Kuzma would come off of the Los Angeles bench to record nine points while shooting eighty percent. Ingram would contribute with seven points, earning three of them from beyond the arc as he pulled down two defensive rebounds. Lonzo Ball would be limited to only a three-pointer in the seven minutes that he played. He would do work in other areas as he recorded one defensive rebound and two assists but it was the Suns who entered halftime with a 73-70 lead.
The Los Angeles Lakers would shoot fifty-two percent from the field as the Phoenix Suns would be limited to forty-seven percent. Ball would start to heat up as he goes off for twelve points, hitting two three-pointers in the process of doing so. Ingram would shoot seventy-five percent from the field as he throws up seven points, three coming from beyond the arc. Larry Nance would score six points while shooting only forty-three percent from the field but he did manage to grab four rebounds. Brook Lopez would only score four points but he would pull down five defensive rebounds.
Rookie point guard Mike James came off of the bench to score nine points, four coming from the free-throw line. T.J. Warren would play for the entire quarter but would be held to five points. Josh Jackson would only score two points in the seven-minute that he played. Devin Booker ended up with two points in the quarter but would pull down four defensive rebounds as the Lakers walk into the fourth period with a 106-99 advantage.
In the last period, the California team would shoot forty-six percent from the field while the Arizona team would shoot forty-four percent from the field. Eric Bledsoe would heat up as he drops sixteen points, shooting eighty-six percent from the field. Booker would contribute as he puts up six points, three coming from beyond the arc. Warren would score two points but did manage to grab two defensive rebounds and one offensive rebound.
As for the Lakers, Brook Lopez shot sixty percent from the field while chalking up eight points which would include one three-pointer. Lonzo Ball would add eight more points to his scoring total while pulling down three defensive rebounds and one offensive rebound. Kyle Kuzma would come off of the bench to record two points and three defensive rebounds as the Los Angeles Lakers creep away with a 132 to 130 win over the Phoenix Suns. Lonzo Ball finished with twenty-nine points, eleven rebounds, and nine assists as Eric Bledsoe would finish with twenty-eight points, two rebounds, and two assists.
